Creating Between Responsibilities
A Glimpse Into What Came After
After graduating in May, I ran into a level of creative burnout I was not fully prepared for. Stepping out of an academic creative environment came with a lot of pressure, and that quickly turned into artist block. At the same time, I was navigating major personal changes and multiple moves, which made it even harder to find the mental space to create. For a while, creativity felt more overwhelming than inspiring.
Over the past few months, I have been slowly working through that block and giving myself permission to step back when needed. Instead of forcing ideas, I focused on adjusting to real life after graduation and letting things settle. During this time, I also took on a deeply personal commission for someone very close to my heart, creating a piece that honored a loyal companion and hero who meant so much to our family. That experience reminded me how powerful and meaningful creating for others can be.
When I finally sat down and opened my sketchbook again, I looked for inspiration in what I genuinely enjoy during my free time. I returned to drawing fabric, figures, and movement, elements that have always felt natural and exciting to me. This process reminded me that creativity does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, reconnecting with what you love most, and with the stories that matter to you, is enough to spark motivation again.
